Heart Health Month!
The Core at La Encantada
February 2018
Dear Jannie,
February is one of our favorite months at The Core! Focusing on healthy hearts this month, we’re excited for an informative and important slate of events. Read on for timely lectures on heart attack & stroke awareness, solutions to heartburn & reflux, and ways to improve heart health through meditation.
We also know that heart health is more than just knowing signs and symptoms. That’s why we’re excited to welcome back Mike Urquhart to The Core this month! Mike will not only get your heart moving with his famous fitness class, but share important insights to keeping your heart healthy.
Outside of Heart Health Month, we’re pleased to continue our partnership with the Center for Neurosciences. They’ll show us the link between hearing loss and cognitive decline, while providing lifestyle tips to keep you sharp. For our parents in the group, our friends from Old Pueblo Anesthesia host an interactive panel to help you prepare you and your child for a surgical visit to TMC.
Finally, many of you have asked for more convenient times for fitness classes. We’ve made changes to some class times, added a HIIT class and made Zumba free this month. Check them out below!

Tuesday, Feb. 6
5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
According to the American Heart Association, more than 92-million adults live
with some form of heart disease or after-effects of stroke. It may seem like the odds are stacked against us, but there are many things you can do

to keep your heart healthy!
Join Renee McAloney, Stroke Program coordinator at TMC, and Erica Sears, Chest Pain & Structural Heart coordinator, as they break down the key differences between heart  attack and stroke. Identify the need-to-know information about each; learn to tell the difference between a heart attack and a stroke, the main risk factors, and what to do if someone is having either. Knowing the difference can save a life!
Did You Hear? Linking Hearing Loss to Cognitive Decline
Wednesday, Feb. 7
5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Nearly two-thirds of Americans will suffer some degree of hearing loss by the time they are in their 70s. While troublesome, the Hearing Loss Association of America says it may come with an even higher risk – cognitive problems and possibly memory loss. Isolation from sounds and lack of communications with others are risk factors that can lead to a reduction in brain activity. While more research is needed to understand the relationship between hearing loss and cognitive problems, we have a much better understanding of this important issue.
Join Abraham Jacob, M,D., with the Center for Neurosciences, as he updates you on the groundbreaking research between cognitive decline and hearing loss. You’ll leave with information and practical tips you can use to keep your hearing going strong! RSVP for this free lecture.
Heart Month Event!
Prevention is the Start to a Healthy Heart

The American Heart Association recently changed its blood pressure guidelines. While seemingly minor, factors like sleep, nutrition and exercise can dramatically affect your heart health and overall well-being. Join us as we welcome back Mike Urquhart, exercise physiologist at TMC Cardiac Rehab and former fitness instructor at The Core.
Mike’s popular classes and insights helped us keep our hearts strong! Mike will guide you through different tips and tricks to get your heart-health game on track. And just for old time’s sake, we’ll follow up his talk with, you guessed it, some exercise! Please come dressed for activity and be ready to work up a sweat! Free class – just RSVP!
